5 & 6 July
World of Textiles

We welcome the Buckinghamshire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers to the Museum, along with Museum lace making demonstrations on Sunday 20 May to provide visitors with the chance to try out spinning, weaving and lace making using traditional methods.

Sheep Dog Demonstrations
12 & 13 July
Sheep dog

Shepherd Steve Stone brings his sheep dogs Moss and young trainee sheep dog, Ted, to the Museum to demonstrate their amazing skills. Come along and see these wonderful dogs in action with the Museum's own flock of pedigree Oxford Downs, a rare breed of sheep traditional to the Chilterns area.

Hoop Racing
19 & 20 July
hoop racing

An opportunity to experience the old sport of hoop racing on the Village Green. Using traditional iron hoops, parts of which were made in the Museum's Forge, visitors will be shown the skills required and then have the opportunity to take part in races using the Museum hoop collection.

Join us for hands-on fun for all the family every week day (from 12.00 pm until 4.00 pm) of the summer holidays.

Saxons versus Vikings
26 & 27 July

Saxons and Vikings

 

Vikings fighting

An exciting opportunity for visitors to meet Viking and Saxon warriors and civilians in a living history encampment.

Find out about the armour, helmets, shields and weapons used by Vikings and Saxons soldiers. Watch combat displays and try on some of the soldiers armour. Civilians will also be on hand to demonstrate the Saxon and Viking way of life with food and cooking and popular games of the time.

12.00 pm Meet the Warriors
The Viking and Saxon warriors practice their drill.
12.30 pm Kiddies Vike*
Children will be able to learn some simple shieldwall drill.
1.00 pm Battle
A small skirmish between the Vikings and the local Anglo-Saxon Fyrd.
3.00 pm Meet the Warriors
The Viking and Saxon warriors practice their drill.
3.30 pm Kiddies Vike*
Children will be able to learn some simple shieldwall drill.
4.00 pm Battle
A small skirmish between the Vikings and the local Anglo-Saxon Fyrd.

* places are limited to 12 children per session and will be booked on a first come first served basis at the living history camp. This activity is suitable for children aged between 7 and 12 years old.
