Early Years,
Key Stage 1 and 2

Available February to November

A visit to Chiltern Open Air Museum provides a visual and direct learning experience for pupils of all ages and abilities, allowing teachers to extend their classroom activities in a diverse and informal environment. The Museum is home to over 30 historic buildings set in 45 acres of parkland and woodland and can enhance many Foundation Stage and National Curriculum themes including “knowledge and understanding of the world”, “can buildings speak?”, “toys from the past”, “homes”, “what was it like for children living in Victorian Britain?” and many more.
All of the Museum’s buildings are furnished as homes and places of work or worship, illustrating the technologies used for heating, cooking and lighting and they also contain the tools and machinery used by farmers, blacksmiths and other workers.
Within the new flexible visit structure, teachers can choose which buildings to visit during their day, ensuring that their classroom learning is complimented.
A selection of pre-bookable activity workshops (both demonstrations and hands-on experiences) are available at an additional charge. All workshops have been designed to enhance your visit and can be tailored to the abilities and requirements of your class and can support many curricula themes. With over ten different workshops available, ranging from traditional brick making, life 2000 years ago to brand new workshops including traditional toys and games and Windsor chair making, there is something for all ages and interests.

Visits include Museum entrance, access to the Museum buildings, access to undercover lunch facilities, provision of one Teachers’ Resource Pack, all materials and resources used during the visit and coach parking in our off-road car park.
