Key Stage 1

A school visit typically starts at 10.00 am and finishes at approximately 2.15 pm,
with 30 minutes timetabled in an undercover lunching area.

Activity Workshops

The following activity workshops will provide your class with a hands-on experiential learning experience. These workshops must be booked in advance of your visit. Although these workshops will be led by Museum teachers, you and your adult support must help the children during the activity and are responsible for the behaviour of your group.

Some of these workshops are also suitable for Reception classes. Please ensure that you choose a workshop that is suitable for the age of your class and the topic you are studying at school.

A maximum of 30 children are able to take part in a workshop at any one time.

How we used to live
How we used to liveChoose to explore either the Victorian toll house or the 1940s prefab. Then choose two of the activity workshops for your class to enjoy. Please ensure that you have chosen the optional aspects of this theme day before booking your visit.
Harvest Tour (available September and October only)
Harvest TourFrom threshing the corn to baking your own bread, your class will discover how the harvest was done in the past
Victorian Christmas (November 2012)
Victorian Christmas Join the teacher in the Victorian school and then help to make the Christmas pudding. Find out about Christmas in the past.

Where do I belong? Your class will be introduced to some of the houses that are at the Museum and their place in the historical timeline. Using investigative skills to identify and sort objects from the house, your class will match the objects to the correct house and time period. The objects chosen will relate to domestic items that many of the children will be familiar with in their own homes Where do I belong

Special Events

Toys through the Ages - 17 June 2011

Enjoy a day of play exploring the world of toys from 2000 years ago to the present. Meet residents of our houses as they teach you to play their favourite games and then make a selection of toys from Anglo-Saxon 'Shells' to 1940s Make do and Mend toys.

The resources within these boxes are designed to enable you to lead activities and discussions with your class at the Museum.

These free of charge but must be pr-ebooked

'Buildings and objects through the senses'

Using feely bags, each containing an object / artefact, children will use their senses to describe the object and make comparisons between the different materials, for example texture and warmth.
