Volunteering at Chiltern Open Air Museum
If you want to meet new people, learn new skills and have fun in a unique environment,
why not join our team of volunteers!

Chiltern Open Air Museum has a large and loyal band of volunteers, who are involved in all aspects of the Museum's operation. Volunteers help the Museum to achieve its principle objectives by dedicating their time and skills to its work, and by bringing a sense of community involvement to the Museum.

There are a great variety of volunteering opportunities to get involved in. Whether you prefer working inside or outdoors, on your own, in a team, using existing skills or learning something new, working with the public or behind the scenes, the Museum has something to suit you!

Historic Building Steward

This is an opportunity for cheerful and enthusiastic volunteers to steward our historic buildings. This involves bringing the buildings alive for visitors, answering their questions and occasionally demonstrating crafts and activities to help interpret the buildings.

An interest in the built heritage and in local history would be an advantage. Volunteers must enjoy talking to the general public. There will be opportunities for the volunteers to learn new skills such as lace making, rag rug making and handling of the artefacts.

Ticket Office and Shop Personnel

Cheerful volunteers required to work in the Museum ticket office and shop. Volunteers will act as the first and last point of contact for visitors to the Museum. The role involves selling tickets, operating the tills, assisting with restocking and acting as a welcoming host to all our visitors.

Excellent customer service skills are essential for this role. Numeracy and the ability to work under pressure required. Previous till and retail experience would be an advantage but full training will be given.

Museum Office Personnel

Friendly and well organised volunteers required to help staff our reception desk in the Museum office. The role involves acting as the first point of contact for telephone and Museum enquires. Duties include post distribution, mail shots, preparing school goodie packs and other general administrative tasks such as typing and filing.

Previous office or reception experience and computer skills would be an advantage but full training will be given. A pleasant telephone manner and the ability to deal with a variety of tasks are important attributes required for this role.

Building Volunteer

Volunteers are involved in the maintenance and re-erection of our historic buildings. This includes carpentry, bricklaying, painting, plumbing, electrics and many odd jobs. Volunteers largely work as a team under the supervision of our Buildings Manager.

Previous experience of, or qualifications in, the above areas of work would be useful, but enthusiasm and willingness to learn are more important attributes.

Site and Farm Volunteer

Volunteers are involved in a variety of outdoor tasks such as fencing, landscaping, woodland work, animal care, gardening and general conservation work.

This is a unique opportunity to work in the open air in a beautiful environment. Volunteers largely work as a team under the supervision of the Site and Farm Manager.

Cafe Assistant

Volunteers with excellent customer service skills required for Museum cafe. The cafe serves a variety of light snacks and drinks and is popular with visitors, volunteers and staff. Volunteers will be required to serve customers, operate the tills, clear tables and clean the cafe as necessary.

Volunteers required to assist the Catering Manager on busy special events days throughout the season, and occasionally staffing the cafe at other times.

Educational Teacher

Volunteers required to provide the interpretation of historical buildings and cultural themes to schools, groups and the general public. The role primarily involves leading group sessions tailored to particular key curriculum subjects such as brick making, butter making, life in the 1940s, Victorian life and shelter building. You will be required to bring the buildings and activities alive for the visitors in an entertaining and informative way. This is a very responsible yet rewarding role. The assistant role will help to prepare and set up the activities, and act as an assistant to the interpreter during the sessions. Full training for both roles will be provided.

These positions are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Museum therefore asks all interpreters to apply for a disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau through the Museum. Previous experience of working with children in a similar role such as teaching or leading group activities would be an advantage. The ability to lead a session and hold an audience's attention is essential. Please contact the education office on 01494 875542 to discuss this opportunity further.

You can volunteer individually, with friends or family. It can be a social time or a quiet time depending on your choice of activity. The time that you commit is up to you, you may have a lot of spare time, or you may only wish to help out perhaps once a year with a particular activity or event.
