Bog Standard -Privies and Public Conveniences
3 & 4 July

From chamber pots to an Edwardian Public Convenience and indoor plumbing, we look at the development of a necessity that we all take for granted in our unique event to celebrate 100 years since the death of Thomas Crapper, who invented the ballcock and bathroom showrooms.

Join us on a trail of our privies and chamber pots and then visit our wonderful collection of plumbing tools. Participate in some exciting family activities on a lavatorial theme!

Our Privy Trail takes you on a journey around the Museum's historic toilet exhibits, including a special replica iron age midden, recreated just for this event, along with amazing facts and quiz questions on early toilets!

Family Activities : 12.00 pm - 4.00 pm each day

Join in with soap carving, soap making and lavatory fun using hard toilet paper to trace images of early Thomas Crapper toilets.

Thomas Crapper Exhibition

We are very grateful to Thomas Crapper and Co for their kind loan of a number of early Thomas Crapper toilets and other Thomas Crapper exhibits! A unique chance to find out more about Thomas Crapper's contribution to the development of sanitaryware,. including the production of man hole covers! Two such covers feature in this exhibition and these can be used for brass rubbings! Purchase the new "Flushed with Pride" book from our shop afterwards, or special manufactured Thomas Crapper toilet rolls, postcards, carbolic soap, sheep poo paper and other very unusual lavatorial souvenirs from a unique weekend!

Alongside the Thomas Crapper exhibits will be a number of our plumbing tools from the Museum artefact stores, which are not normally on display.

Join in on the Farm - Hay Making
10 & 11 July
Come along and help the farm team build a new hay rick for 2010 with the newly gathered hay grown on the Museum site. (weather dependent) Help prepare straw for the thatching of the hay rick (“yealming") once the rick is built.

Chiltern Art Weekend
17 & 18 July

We invite you to bring a sketchpad, easel or camera along to try and capture the beauty and serenity of the Museum’s buildings and site. Meet local artists around our idyllic park and woodland to see their amazing work based on the inspiration of the landscape of the Chilterns and historic buildings.

Visiting local artists over the weekend will be demonstrating and displaying a range of different art forms including:
  • Silk painting
  • Pastels
  • Etchings, linocut and collagraph prints
  • Handmade lampworked glass bead jewellery
  • Water colours and drawings (Sunday only)
  • Mixed media art (Sunday only)
  • Traditional and contemporary landscapes (Sunday only)

Visitors will have the opportunity to try out sketching and silk painting, as well as enjoying the wide variety of exciting local art talent on offer. Any artists interested in exhibiting over the weekend, please ask for Melissa Maynard on arrival or phone 01494 871117.

Classic Vehicles Show
24 & 25 July

Beautiful classic cars, lorries and motorcycles and farm vehicles will visit the Museum during this weekend event providing a wonderful spectacle for visitors and classic vehicle enthusiasts!

Explore the lovingly restored Austins and MGs, as well as many other makes of cars and motorcycles around the Museum. You may even enjoy some time trying your skill at riding vintage bicycles on the Village Green. Discover a collection of tractors, farm wagons and even a 1920s crawler from Earl’s Court in our farmyard.

Watch out as you wander down to our Toll House! Keep your valuables safe as the Toll Gate Keeper will warn you that highwaymen are near by!

Skill at Arms Display
Light Cavalry Honourable Artillery Company
31 July
Ever wondered how the cavalry practised their skill at arms?

Marvel at these magnificent cavalry horses and their riders as they execute precision turns and military manoeuvres.

There will be displays throughout the day (times to be confirmed) and a chance to meet the horses when they are resting.
