This weekend (7/8 July) at award winning Chiltern Open Air Museum, fans of TV series and books Sharpe will have chance to get to know more about the soldiers of the Napoleonic Wars – and specifically members of the 95th Rifles Battalion! The re- enactment group will be settling into their encampment on the Museums Village Green and giving visitors the rare chance to see their historic fire arms.

Museum Director Sue Shave is delighted that the popular group are returning once more to the Museum. ‘The Riflemen of the 19th century Napoleonic Wars were different, in many ways, to the soldiers that made up the bulk of the British Army. Instead of the classic ‘redcoat’ and white crossbelts worn by most infantrymen, the Rifles wore a distinctive ‘greenjacket’ and black leatherwork.’

Continues Sue: ‘This was the first attempt at camouflage by the British Army and was a reflection of the very different role expected of this brand new soldier, who was encouraged to make use of his surroundings. We are very much looking forward to their visit’

The Museum will be holding displays throughout the weekend including Regimental parades, drills and skirmishes. There will be Rifle Drills at 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm on both days, and also a living history camp open to the public where they will show displays of kit and life on camp. Adds Sue ‘This is a great chance to learn all about the Napoleonic Wars talking at first hand to the soldiers. Also, as at most events, all of the Museum’s buildings will be open to visitors, so there is plenty to see and do!’

In addition, on Sunday 8 anyone interested in becoming a Museum volunteer  for the ‘front of house’ roles – such as the Shop and Visitor Centre, and stewarding historic building – is invited to an Information Session about volunteering at 3pm – this is open to anyone aged 18 and over. There will be a quick introduction to the Museum and its volunteer roles – and you will be welcome to have a free look around the Museum afterwards.
