Job Title: Visitor Services Officer
Hours: Part-time 30 hours per week working Friday to Monday. (Option of one weekend off per month working 2 days midweek on this week)
Salary: £9,180 (FT equivalent £18,720 per annum)
Contract: Fixed Term 34 weeks (16 March 2020 – 15 November 2020)

COAM has an exciting seasonal job opportunity, running from 18th March to 2nd November. The Visitor Services Officer will be a core member of the Front of House Team, leading the site over weekends, and ensuring that our historic buildings and site are presented at their best. A great development role, the VSO will work alongside the Events Manager and Operations Manager to deliver the highest quality customer service, whether that’s for 1600 people for a Roman gladiator battle or group visit of 20. You will work 3 weekends out of 4 as well as Fridays and Mondays. Applicants must be over 18 years old. The Museum is in a rural location so you will need to have a driving licence and car.

Job Description

You will be part of a busy team responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the Museum’s visitor operations on a daily basis throughout our open season. You will unlock and open the Museum and welcome staff and volunteers. You will be a key point of call for staff and volunteers on site and work closely with the Front of House Team, helping out with co-ordinating volunteers, and delivering events.

• Be a core member of the Museum’s Duty Staff rota covering 3 out of 4 weekends each month
• Provide excellent customer service
• Unlock and open the Museum’s buildings
• Maintain high presentation standards across the Museum site and report any deficiencies
• Ensure Museum buildings and displays have been set up correctly and look clean and tidy
• Look after the Museum’s access vehicles ensuring that they are kept maintained and clean
• Ensure access for visitors with specific needs
• Support the Events Manager with the set up and take down of events
• Support the Wedding Co-ordinator with weddings and private hire
• Assist with collections care and volunteer co-ordination
• Provide Visitor Service Assistants and Catering Assistants with cover when required
• Engage with visitors informing them about current and upcoming events, activities and exhibitions enabling them to enjoy the Museum’s offer
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of the Museum’s work and objectives to actively promote membership and donations to the cause
• Understand and follow the Museum’s health and safety, cash-handling and operational procedures
• Assist the Operations Manager and museum staff when required
• Duty First Aider.

Essential skills/experience

• A team player with a cheerful, positive, can-do attitude
• Experience of working within a customer facing role
• Happy to work alone and unsupervised
• Able to stay calm in a busy environment and able to use your own initiative
• Comfortable working with the public including vulnerable adults and children
• An understanding and/or interest of the conservation of historic buildings and collections
• An understanding and/or interest of museum practice and theory
• Reliable and punctual
• Experience of working with volunteers
• Available to work weekends and Bank Holidays as this is essential to the role
• Willing to learn and develop.

Desirable skills/experience

• Current first aid certificate
• Experience of working with EPOS systems
• Good IT skills
• Passionate about Chiltern Open Air Museum and our cause
