School Visits

An inspiring learning experience for school visits

Our award winning museum in Buckinghamshire is a great place for school trips and visits. Our school workshops operate at a high standard and we are proud to have been awarded the prestigious Sandford Award for Quality Heritage Education and the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.

The museum offers learning opportunities in an exciting, immersive and safe environment. Our site is uniquely positioned to provide a fully immersive learning experience. We have 37 historic buildings that were the workplaces or homes of ordinary people. Our buildings cover 2000 years of Chiltern’s history and includes a replica Iron Age roundhouse. In addition to the buildings the site has a woodland, two Mesolithic sites and a shelter building area.

We also have a highly skilled team of experts who have created a wide learning programme offering particular specialisms in prehistory, literacy and science and we offer theme days to suit most topics. Most of these workshops are run using a mixture of costumed workshop leaders and actor educators (who remain in character throughout) providing a school learning experience like no other! Schools are also able to tailor-make a theme day of their choice based on their learning objectives.

Self-led groups are offered resources to help them explore the beautiful woodland, traditional working farm and historic buildings at their own pace.  Whole-school visits are welcomed and the Museum works in partnership with local schools to ensure the highest quality provision.

‘The team at Chiltern Open Air Museum (COAM) are valuable allies in the education of children. The skills and expertise of the staff are second to none, with the learning of the children at the root of what they offer. It is a pleasure to be working alongside such a skillful and organised team which aims to challenge and motivate children outside the classroom.’
