Toys and Games from the Past Workshop

Our Toys and Games from the Past Workshop

During this workshop children will be introduced to toys from the past.  They will discuss the different materials used to create toys in the days before plastic was available and will have an opportunity to play with traditional skipping ropes, metal hoops, cup and ball toys, traditional dominoes as well as trying to solve the puzzle of the towers of hannoi.

This workshop will last 45 minutes and is aimed at KS1 and KS2.

Children will:
  • Contrast the differences between richer and poorer children in the past and learn that ‘poorer’ children created their toys from the materials around them.
  • They will explore the different materials used to build toys and will note the levels of craftsmanship involved.
  • They will develop an understanding that the craftsmanship involved in making greatly increased the cost involved hence more complex toys were affordable for ordinary families.
  • Children will have an opportunity to play with different types of toys from the past
