Step into the heat of the forge and try your hand at traditional blacksmithing in our Victorian workshop.
Join one of our expert blacksmiths for a full-day, hands-on Blacksmithing Experience at Chiltern Open Air Museum. Taking place in our authentically rebuilt Victorian forge, this unique experience will introduce you to the skills, tools, and techniques of traditional ironworking.
What You’ll Learn
During this immersive experience day, you’ll:
Learn basic blacksmithing techniques like tapering, twisting, bending, and punching
Be introduced to forge safety and fire management
Use tools including the hammer, tongs, and anvil
Forge your own simple hand-crafted object to take home—such as a hook, poker or decorative item
Gain a deeper understanding of how blacksmiths once worked in rural communities
You’ll work alongside our skilled blacksmith step-by-step, with guidance and supervision throughout the day. It’s a physical but highly rewarding experience—no previous blacksmithing knowledge required!
About Your Tutor: Mark Harding
Mark is a professional artist blacksmith based near Slough, with over 15 years of experience in the craft. He trained at the National School of Blacksmithing in Hereford, earning his Level 3 subsidiary qualification with distinction. For the past eight years, Mark has worked full-time as a blacksmith, specialising in domestic commissions, repairs, teaching, and historical reproductions. His passion for traditional metalwork and expert guidance ensures an inspiring and hands-on learning experience.
Course Details
Date & Time: 10:30am – 3:30pm (arrival from 10:15am)
Location: Chiltern Open Air Museum, Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire
Group Size: Small groups for personal instruction
Price: £160 for 1 person or £260 for 2 people
Age Requirement: Participants must be 18 or over
Experience Level: No experience necessary

A packed lunch (Skippings Barn Café may also be open for refreshments)

About the Forge
Our Victorian forge was reconstructed using traditional methods and sits within the grounds of our open-air museum. It offers a rare opportunity to work with fire and iron in a truly authentic setting.
